EarSketch

Developed by the Georgia Institute of Technology, the platform combines a code editor with a digital audio workstation (DAW) interface, allowing learners to write scripts that arrange audio samples, apply effects, and produce musical compositions. Users can choose between Python and JavaScript as the programming language, and the environment provides access to a library of audio samples contributed by artists, along with tools for creating custom beats and uploading original sounds.

The browser-based interface removes the need for software installation and runs across desktop operating systems. The platform is used in secondary and higher education settings to support introductory computing courses, music technology lessons, and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) initiatives.

It includes a structured curriculum with lessons, examples, and challenges aligned to computer science standards, as well as teacher resources for classroom delivery. Features include collaborative scripting, version history, sharing of compositions, and a teacher dashboard for tracking student progress.

EarSketch is distributed at no cost and is supported through grants and research funding associated with Georgia Tech.
