Description

Accelerated Reader is a reading practice and assessment programme used in schools to monitor pupils' independent reading, assess comprehension through quizzes on completed books, and track literacy progress over time.

The programme is built around quizzes that pupils complete after reading books, with each title assigned a reading level and points value based on length and text complexity. Teachers use a diagnostic assessment, the STAR Reading test, to identify each pupil's Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), a recommended range of book difficulty intended to match individual reading ability.

A catalogue of thousands of titles is indexed with reading levels, allowing teachers and librarians to direct pupils toward appropriate material and monitor the books they choose to read independently. Accelerated Reader is used in primary and secondary schools to support independent reading practice and to provide staff with data on engagement, comprehension accuracy, and vocabulary growth.

The system produces reports on quiz performance, time spent reading, and progress against targets, which can be used to inform interventions, guided reading sessions, and parental updates. In the United Kingdom the product is distributed by GL Assessment, part of Renaissance Learning, and is typically used alongside other literacy and assessment tools within the publisher's catalogue.
