Developed by Smartbox, the software supports a range of input methods including touch, eye gaze, switch scanning, and pointer access, allowing users with physical, cognitive, or communication difficulties to operate a computer or communication device. It includes pre-built grid sets for symbol communication, text-based communication, literacy support, and computer access, with options to customise existing grids or create new ones.

The platform also provides tools for environment control, enabling users to operate household devices such as televisions, lights, and door openers through infrared and smart home integrations. In educational settings, Grid 3 is used by speech and language therapists, teachers, and support staff working with pupils who have complex communication needs, including those with cerebral palsy, motor neurone disease, autism, or acquired brain injuries.

The software is available as a free trial download for Windows devices and is compatible with Smartbox hardware such as the Grid Pad range, as well as third-party devices. Additional features include voice banking, message banking, remote editing through Smartbox Account, and access to a library of shared grid sets contributed by the user community.
