Just Words
Description
Just Words is a phonics and word study programme used for teaching decoding and spelling skills to students in upper elementary grades through adult learners who have mild to moderate gaps in foundational literacy.
Developed by Wilson Language Training, the programme is structured around 14 units delivered across approximately 140 lessons, with each lesson designed to last around 45 minutes. It targets learners in Grade 4 through Grade 12, as well as adult students, who can accurately read and spell one-syllable words but require systematic instruction in multisyllabic word structure, advanced phonics, and high-frequency word study.
The curriculum addresses six syllable types, common prefixes and suffixes, Latin roots, and rules governing word formation. Instruction follows the Wilson methodology, which applies a structured literacy approach grounded in Orton-Gillingham principles.
Materials supplied with the programme include a Student Notebook, Word Cards, Sound Cards, a Magnetic Journal with letter tiles, and an Interactive Teacher's Edition. The programme is typically used in whole-class, small-group, or one-to-one settings within mainstream classrooms, intervention rooms, and adult literacy environments.
Teacher training and accreditation are offered through Wilson Language Training, and the programme is intended as a Tier 2 intervention within multi-tiered systems of support rather than as a replacement for the more intensive Wilson Reading System.
