The service operates a personalised learning dashboard that tracks progress, recommends content based on prior activity, and awards mastery points as learners complete exercises. Teacher and parent accounts allow adults to assign content, monitor learner progress, and view reports on activity and skill development.

Khan Academy is used in schools as a supplement to classroom instruction, by home educators, and by independent learners. Content is available in multiple languages through translation partnerships, and the platform can be accessed via a web browser or dedicated mobile applications for iOS and Android.

The organisation is funded through philanthropic donations and offers all core content without charge.
