Microsoft MakeCode

Description

Microsoft MakeCode is a web-based coding platform used for introducing computer science to students through block-based and text-based editors, project tutorials, and immediate visual feedback across a range of hardware and software targets.

The platform supports a range of editors aimed at different age groups and skill levels, including MakeCode for the micro:bit, MakeCode Arcade for retro-style game development, MakeCode for Minecraft, MakeCode for LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3, and MakeCode for Adafruit Circuit Playground Express. Each editor provides a drag-and-drop block interface alongside a JavaScript and Python text editor, allowing learners to transition between visual and text-based programming.

Projects include built-in simulators that display the output of code without requiring physical hardware, and completed programs can be downloaded and run on supported devices. MakeCode is used in primary, secondary, and further education settings to deliver computing curriculum content, coding clubs, and STEM activities.

The service includes tutorials, sample projects, and lesson plans aimed at teachers, and supports classroom use through integration with Microsoft Teams and other educational tools. The editors run in a web browser without requiring installation, and projects can be saved locally or shared via generated links.

MakeCode is developed by the Microsoft Research division and is released as an open-source project under the MIT licence.
