Description

Microsoft School Data Sync is a free cloud-based service used for importing and synchronising student information system data with Microsoft 365 to automate the creation of classes, groups, and user accounts.

The service connects to a school's Student Information System (SIS) or Management Information System (MIS) and uses the imported data to provision rosters across Microsoft 365 services, including Microsoft Teams for Education, Intune for Education, OneNote Class Notebooks, and various third-party education applications. Administrators can supply data through CSV file uploads, PowerSchool API connections, OneRoster API integrations, or direct SIS connectors.

Once configured, the system creates and maintains class teams, section groups, and security groups, mapping teachers and students to the appropriate classes based on enrolment records. School Data Sync supports incremental updates so that changes in the source SIS, such as new enrolments, withdrawals, or staff changes, are reflected in Microsoft 365 without manual intervention.

The service includes a dashboard for monitoring sync status, reviewing errors, and managing sync profiles, along with role-based controls for delegating administration. It is used by primary, secondary, and higher education institutions that have adopted Microsoft 365 for Education and need to align their identity and classroom structures with existing SIS records.

Integration is available with a range of common education platforms, and the service follows the OneRoster and CSV v2.1 specifications for data exchange.
