Description

MLC Number Line is a free virtual manipulative app from the Math Learning Center used for visualising and working with numbers in sequence on a customisable number line, with or without tick marks.

The application presents users with a horizontal number line that can be configured to display whole numbers, fractions, decimals, or negative values. Tick marks can be toggled on or off, and the scale and starting point of the line can be adjusted to suit different mathematical tasks.

Users can place jumps, arrows, and labels along the line to model operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, skip counting, and rounding. Annotation tools allow drawing, writing, and adding text directly onto the workspace, and finished work can be saved as an image or shared via a generated link.

The tool is part of a wider suite of free mathematics apps produced by the Math Learning Center, a non-profit organisation that develops the Bridges in Mathematics curriculum. It is available as a browser-based web application and as native apps for iOS, Android, Windows, and Chromebook, allowing use on interactive whiteboards, tablets, and individual pupil devices.

The app is typically used in primary and lower secondary classrooms to support the teaching of number sense, place value, and arithmetic operations, and is suitable for whole-class demonstrations as well as individual or small-group pupil work.
