MLC Pattern Shapes

Developed by The Math Learning Center, this browser-based tool replicates the traditional set of physical pattern blocks used in primary and elementary mathematics classrooms. Users can drag, rotate, duplicate, and arrange coloured geometric shapes including triangles, squares, trapezoids, rhombuses, and hexagons onto a digital workspace.

The application includes features for filling outline puzzles, drawing lines, adding text annotations, changing background grids, and grouping shapes. Work can be saved and shared via a generated link, allowing pupils and teachers to revisit or distribute mathematical constructions.

The application is available as a web app accessible through modern browsers and as a downloadable application for iOS, Android, Windows, and Chromebook devices. It is designed for use across early years, primary, and lower secondary education, supporting topics including fractions, area and perimeter, tessellation, symmetry, and pattern recognition.

The Math Learning Center provides the tool free of charge as part of a suite of virtual manipulatives aligned with mathematics curricula. Teachers commonly use it during whole-class instruction on interactive whiteboards, in small-group work, and for individual pupil exploration.
