OT-2 is an open-source automated liquid handling robot used for performing pipetting tasks in life science laboratories, supporting applications such as PCR setup, nucleic acid extraction, and next-generation sequencing library preparation.

Manufactured by Opentrons Labworks, the OT-2 is a benchtop laboratory instrument designed to automate liquid transfer protocols typically performed manually by researchers. The system uses interchangeable single-channel and 8-channel pipettes with volume ranges from 1 µL to 1000 µL, and operates across a deck layout of 11 standardised slots that accept labware such as well plates, tube racks, reservoirs, and tip racks.

Hardware modules including a temperature module, magnetic module, thermocycler, and HEPA filtration unit can be integrated to extend the range of supported workflows. Protocols are written in Python using the Opentrons API or constructed visually through the Protocol Designer web application, and executed via the Opentrons App on a connected computer.

The platform is used in academic research, biotechnology, clinical, and educational settings for applications including PCR and qPCR setup, nucleic acid extraction, ELISA, serial dilutions, normalisation, and next-generation sequencing library preparation.
