PhET Interactive Simulations
Description
PhET Interactive Simulations is a free online library of interactive science and mathematics simulations used for teaching and learning physics, chemistry, biology, earth science, and mathematics in educational settings.
Founded in 2002 by Nobel Laureate Carl Wieman at the University of Colorado Boulder, the project provides a collection of HTML5-based simulations covering a range of STEM subjects. The simulations are designed for use by teachers and students from primary through to university level, and can be accessed directly through a web browser without requiring installation.
Content is organised by subject area and grade level, with filtering options to help educators locate simulations relevant to their curriculum. The platform offers supporting materials alongside the simulations, including teacher guides, lesson plans, and activities contributed by educators.
Simulations are available in multiple languages through community translation efforts, and the underlying code is open source. PhET also provides resources for accessibility, with many simulations supporting keyboard navigation, screen reader compatibility, and alternative input methods.
The project is based on educational research into how students learn through interactive exploration, and is used in classrooms, homework assignments, and informal learning contexts worldwide.
