Sakai LMS
Description
Sakai LMS is an open-source learning management system used by higher education institutions and schools for delivering online courses, managing assessments, and facilitating communication between instructors and students.
Developed and maintained by the Apereo Foundation, Sakai is a community-driven platform built in Java and released under the Educational Community License. The software is designed to support teaching, learning, research collaboration, and administrative workflows within academic environments.
Core functionality includes course site creation, assignment submission and grading, online assessments, gradebook management, discussion forums, wikis, calendars, announcements, and content repositories. Sakai also provides tools for synchronous and asynchronous communication, including chat rooms, messaging, and integration with web conferencing services.
The platform supports integration with external systems through standards such as Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI), Common Cartridge, and SCORM, allowing institutions to connect third-party educational applications and content. Sakai is typically self-hosted by universities or deployed through commercial hosting partners that contribute to the project.
Because it is open source, institutions can modify the codebase to suit local requirements and contribute changes back to the community. Sakai is used by universities, colleges, and consortia internationally, and its development is governed by member organisations that participate in the Apereo Foundation.
