The Layered Earth
Description
The Layered Earth is an interactive earth science software package used for delivering geology, meteorology and physical geography curriculum content within Starlab digital planetarium systems and classroom environments.
Developed for use with the Digital Starlab portable planetarium, the software provides a collection of three-dimensional models, simulations and lesson resources covering topics such as plate tectonics, the rock cycle, volcanism, atmospheric processes and landform development. Content is structured around Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and is accessed through an interface designed for teacher-led presentation, allowing instructors to manipulate models, zoom into geological features and run simulations during lessons.
The package is aimed at primary, middle and secondary school educators teaching earth and space science, and is typically deployed alongside other Starlab curriculum modules covering astronomy, biology and cultural studies. Schools, museums and outreach programmes use the software within inflatable or fixed planetarium domes, as well as on standard classroom displays, to support immersive instruction in geological and meteorological concepts.
Accompanying teacher materials include lesson outlines, suggested activities and assessment guidance aligned with current science standards in the United States.
