VEX 123
Description
VEX 123 is an educational robotics platform used for introducing primary school pupils to computer science, computational thinking, and STEM concepts through screen-free coding activities.
Developed by VEX Robotics, the platform consists of a programmable robot, a Coder device with physical coding cards, and an accompanying touch-button interface that allows pupils to issue commands without the need for a tablet or computer. Pupils can progress from tactile, screen-free programming using the Coder to block-based coding within the VEXcode 123 software, providing a developmental pathway as learners become more confident with computational concepts.
The robot includes built-in sensors, an internal speaker, and LED indicators, and can interact with printed activity tiles that form the basis of structured lessons. The platform is aimed at pupils typically aged four to eight and is used in early years and Key Stage 1 and 2 classrooms to support the teaching of sequencing, loops, events, and problem-solving.
VEX Robotics provides a library of curriculum-aligned lesson plans, activities, and teacher resources through the VEX Library, with materials mapped to common computing standards. VEX 123 forms part of the broader VEX continuum of educational robotics products, which extends through VEX GO, VEX IQ, and VEX V5 for older pupils and competitive robotics programmes.
