Description

WhiteBox Learning System is a virtual STEM education platform used for teaching engineering design principles to students in grades 6-12 through simulated design, build, and test activities across twelve project categories.

Developed by Flinn Scientific, the platform provides twelve project-based applications covering topics such as solar power, wind energy, dragsters, mousetrap cars, gliders, drones, rockets, rovers, prosthetics, green cars, shelters, and structural engineering. Each application allows students to design, model, and analyse their projects using 3D virtual modelling tools, then iterate on their designs based on simulated test results.

Companion physical kits, including 3D printers, are available through the Flinn Scientific store to allow students to construct and test their designs in the real world after completing the virtual design process. The system includes a built-in learning management component that enables teachers to manage multiple classrooms or student groups, monitor progress in real time, and access analytics on iterations, completed designs, and student performance.

A competitive element called WhiteBox Nationals provides five progressive levels of design challenges through which students can compete against peers from other schools across the country. The platform is designed for both in-class instruction and supplemental learning, and is used in secondary and middle school STEM curricula to teach engineering design processes, including requirements analysis, design refinement, and iterative testing.
