Xcode
Description
Xcode is an integrated development environment (IDE) developed by Apple Inc. used for creating software applications for macOS, iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS.
The environment includes a source code editor with syntax highlighting and code completion, a graphical interface builder for designing user interfaces, an asset catalogue for managing images and resources, and integrated debugging and performance analysis tools. Xcode supports the Swift and Objective-C programming languages and incorporates frameworks such as SwiftUI, UIKit, and AppKit.
The application bundles the iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS Simulators, allowing developers to test applications without physical hardware. Xcode also integrates with Git for source control and includes Instruments, a profiling tool for analysing application performance, memory usage, and energy consumption.
Xcode is distributed free of charge through the Mac App Store and the Apple Developer website, though publishing applications to the App Store requires enrolment in the Apple Developer Program. In educational settings, Xcode is used in computer science and software engineering courses where students learn application development for Apple platforms, including those following Apple's Develop in Swift curriculum and Swift Playgrounds-based learning pathways.
Universities, colleges, and schools teaching mobile application development, particularly in coding clubs and after-school programmes, use Xcode alongside Swift Playgrounds to introduce students to programming concepts and app creation. The IDE includes documentation viewers, code samples, and templates intended to support both new and experienced developers.
